United Way Greater Toronto: Food Security Impact Area

by UNITED WAY GREATER TORONTO

Nearly 7 million Canadians, including 1.8 million children, experienced food insecurity in 2021—numbers that will likely increase with growing inflation and rising interest rates.

Poverty is the main reason why people experience food insecurity, and not everyone is impacted equally: women, Indigenous peoples and racialized communities, and recent immigrants are more likely to be affected. Choosing between food, rent, transportation, childcare, and other costs may mean skipping meals or going for days without eating. This has a tremendous impact on physical and mental health and well-being.

At United Way Greater Toronto, we aim to transform communities into places with strong, vibrant and connected local food systems where all residents have access to culturally relevant and healthy food.

As a partner, advocate, and community-builder, we take a multi-pronged approach to this complex challenge, supporting solutions that address urgent and unmet needs through focused programs as well as strategies for systems-level change.

Please join United Way Greater Toronto in expanding food security by donating today.
