UNHCR is facing huge shortfalls in funding for crises that have fallen from the news agenda or never been a focus of the world’s attention. Without urgent action, funding shortfalls will have devastating real-life consequences for refugees.
Conflict. The climate emergency. The pandemic. These are just some of the factors that have combined to deepen the vulnerability and increase the number of forcibly displaced people around the world.
In country after country, we face a funding gap. In Lebanon, for example, we have only 40% of the funding we need. Yemen stands at 36%. The Democratic Republic of the Congo at 33%.
Overall costs have risen in 2022 and multiple emergencies including drought in the Horn of Africa, displacement from Venezuela, flooding in Pakistan, and food shortages and fuel price hikes mean we need more funding than ever before.
UNHCR’s work in countries such as Somalia, Lebanon, Colombia, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo are suffering from funding shortfalls of millions of dollars which could result in devastating consequences. Children are out of school, families are not able to afford food and people have limited access to healthcare.
