Giving Tuesday

par The UN Refugee Agency ( UNHCR CANADA / HCR CANADA)

This year, the global refugee crisis made headlines when we reached a new historic high: 100 million people around the world, forced to flee their homes to find safety.

Ongoing emergency of escalating displacement have receded into the background — with the tragic result that longer term humanitarian crises go underreported and underfunded.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) for example, has more than 6 million forcibly displaced people living within its borders and hosts one of the most complex humanitarian crises in the world — but remains only 33% funded, meaning critical programs are at risk of being cut.

UNHCR is continuing to provide protection and assistance in the DRC — but with no foreseeable end to the widespread violence against civilians, the number of people who rely on us for support every single day will continue to grow.

If we cannot close the funding gap, four out of five internally displaced people (IDPs) will not receive adequate shelter in 2023 – forcing them to sleep in churches, out in the open, or even may resort to returning to their homes when it is still unsafe to do so.

With more support, we can help provide 251 transitional shelters — which are essential in helping forcibly displaced people to rebuild their lives.

Not only does shelter provide them with protection from the elements, it also gives them a sense of security, self-sufficiency, and dignity.

This Giving Tuesday, join us in solidarity with forcibly displaced people by helping UNHCR close the funding gap in the DRC and other underfunded crises around the world.
