Central African Republic Situation

by The UN Refugee Agency ( UNHCR CANADA / HCR CANADA)

1.5 million uprooted Central Africans need urgent aid—that's nearly a third of the country’s population.

More than 200,000 people have fled in panic, leaving their belongings behind after new electoral violence in the Central African Republic. Men, women and children are seeking safety into the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC),Cameroon, Chad, and the Republic of the Congo—and thousands moreremain displaced inside CAR.

Most arrivals are staying with host communities or in makeshift shelters andthey urgently need water, shelter, access to health and adequate sanitation to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other diseases.

Inside CAR, UNHCR’s focus remains on life-saving protection and assistance, distributing basic relief items to the newly displaced and new community shelters are being set up in response to the growing number of internally displace people. In neighbouring countries, UNHCR and its partners continue to respond to new arrivals while building refugee’s livelihoods and ability to sustain themselves.
