Rapid economic, social, and demographic changes have led to growing inequality in Peel, Toronto, and York Region. Challenges such as a lack of local economic opportunity, poor walkability, and insufficient access to space have a transformative impact on how residents connect to one another. Scarcity of social connections can impact a community’s overall safety, well-being, and quality of life.
WHY UNITED WAY?
United Way aims to create opportunities for residents to influence and participate in building healthy and vibrant communities. We encourage residents and agency partners to work together with other stakeholders to design and implement local solutions to local issues. These initiatives include work on local economic opportunities, civic engagement and providing easy access to local needs like food insecurity and mental health supports.
With your support last year, we:
- helped 143,520 individuals receive support to connect with others, the community, or much-needed services
- assisted 38,395 individuals enhance their social support and peer networks to reduce social isolation
- helped 17,607 individuals acquire knowledge, skills, and connections to prepare for the labour market
And, we were able to invest in:
- Community Hubs (such as Access Point on Danforth) offering vital services and supports such as employment services, community gardens and kitchens, family and youth programs and more, all under one roof
-Initiatives like our Inclusive Local Economic Opportunity work in the Golden Mile, bringing together the private, public, and community sectors to find innovative ways to reduce gaps in economic prosperity at the neighbourhood level
